Data: Violent crime rare at The Domain, but assaults are trending up

Following Tuesday first-ever homicide at the Domain, crime statistics show that since the shopping area was established violent crimes have been rare -- but car burglaries are assaults are increasing.

As of Wednesday, police area still searching for the gunman who took a man’s life in the Dick’s Sporting Goods parking lot. Police haven't released the victim's identify or a suspect description.

Some residents who live at The Domain, like Melia Martin, are questioning their safety after the homicide. “I’m probably going to be looking to live elsewhere this summer when my lease is up,” said Martin.

Other residents, like Elaine Krause, said the murder was “alarming” but crime like this “can happen anywhere.”

According KrimeLabb, an Austin-based crime statistics monitoring site, violent crime at the Domain isn’t common but car burglaries are, while reported assaults have been trending upwards.

In the 900-meter radius around the parking lot of the sporting goods store where the shooting happened, KrimeLabb data shows there were only 11 reported violent crimes last year. (Violent crime is measured by reported murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault).

Assaults have been increasing, with 60 reported in 2017, and just under 50 in 2016.

Martin said she 's“lucky” that only her sunglasses were stolen when her car was broken into at The Domain last summer. Vehicle burglaries are the most prevalent crime, with 130 reported cases in 2017.

CBS Austin reached out to The Domain on Wednesday for comment, we have yet to hear back.
